There’s nothing worse than being stuck inside on a rainy day, with feral kids suffering from cabin fever. Argh, it’s giving me a headache just thinking about it! Here are some tried and tested activities to entertain your kids on such an occasion, and give you back some sanity:
1. Make an indoor cubby.
Gather doonas and blankets and drape over tables and chairs to form the cubby, and fill with pillows and cushions. Sit and enjoy morning tea, read books or host a tea party.
2. Do some baking.
Make a batch of simple biscuits and set out an assortment of coloured icings, sprinkles, smarties etcetera and let your kids go to town decorating them all.
3. Make use of Junk Mail.
Cut out pictures from junk mail and magazines and paste onto paper or into a scrap book. You could go by theme (food, animals, people etc) or do a wish list for a birthday or Christmas.
Raid the dress up box – and mum’s wardrobe – and have a blast dressing up in different outfits. Fashion parades are always a hit with little girls too.
5. Get out of the house.
Avoid cabin fever by hitting one of the indoor attractions near you – it could be a museum, aquarium, aquatic centre or the library.
And finally, if all else fails and you’re at your wits end – embrace the rain. Throw on a raincoat and gumboots and go jump in puddles and sing in the rain. After all, a little rain never hurt anyone, did it?
